The Pit

Nine sequences of bytes

The First

A mostly empty scene with a few rocks lying around and the Pit in center.
The First enters

First:

Into the Pit I fell
And fall was long
As long as Pit is
That much I'm sure of
I'm not about the rest:
Who am I? And why did I fall?
For now, I seem to be somewhat dead;
But still, I can watch and I can see
And so I shall; Shall see what will they make of this.

The First sits on the rock and falls silent. Nobody sees him.

The Second

The Second enters

Second:

I was sent here
To investigate
The disappearance of the First;
Strange case it is;
I'm a stranger here, and no idea where to start;
I'm pretty sure this has something to do with pit over here.

Second kneels in front of pit and looks into it

Second:

Nothing I can see;
I should've brought a flashlight.

The Third

The Third enters

Third:

Greetings, the Second
I am Third; I live here; I shall help
For I do not fancy thought that killer might be amongst us.

Second:

Greetings, the Third; I appreciate the help;
Especially from a man who knows this place;
I certainly could use your help;
For now, do you happen to have a flashlight?

Third:

No flashlight; I don't need it
I see in dark, as good as bats do;
And you don't need it, for The Pit
Is black as hell, and no lantern will help you.

Second:

Than we shall leave it; and palaver
About the subject of the killer.

The Fourth

The Fourth enters

Fourth:

Oh my, oh my
Don't touch that woundrous pit
It's phenomenon, don't you see
A man can fall right in and fly
And fall and fall, and no one can tell
When does he hit the ground.

Third:

This guy's a nutcase; He's a scientist
But cannot tell a pit when he sees it
He thinks that it's a gate, to somewhere far from here
And thus he must study it.

Second:

I can tell that he is hiding something;
Could he be the killer?

Third:

That's hardly possible; Even if he killed
He would have set up a lab right on the murder scene
And study the act of manslaughter.

Fourth:

I have a nurse that can confirm
That I've been all night in my study
Performing very important science.
And you -- hands off my precious pit!
I still have samples of darkness to gather.

The Fifth

The Fifth enters

Fifth:

My drama sensor tells me that
I must be here
And so I came, now feed me
The bits and bytes of tragedy.

Third:

This one is cyborg; has implants
Implanted all over his body;
He can't be killer, for his brain enhancer
Forces him to cooperate with law
(To Fifth) A man was killed here
Thrown into pit, and law is onto his killer
Have your fine eyething
Eyed something in the gloom of night?

Fifth:

Apart from noises from the Fourth's bedroom
And TV blasting from the Seventh's windows
My ears heard nothing and my eyes were blind
Because they were closed, as it's the custom here
In the gloom of night, as you have noticed.
Now if you excuse me, my mental curcuits need some rest.

The Sixth

The Sixth enters

Sixth:

Behold, my eyes! The law enforcement
Have come to enforce the law on this so holy ground
I sense a death; A bad one here; I sense some machine oil; The Fifth, stand back, all right?

Third:

The man's a fanatic; He believes in god;
That's weird enough, his god is even weirder;
He orders his followers to only open eyes at night;
Open the nose in winter; And open ears when nothing can be heard
He might be it, but don't expect
Him to succumb under the torture, or ever confess.
He'd rather die. I understand him
I wouldn't want to live such a life.

Second:

I shall remember him; We'll see if we will find some evidence.

The Seventh

The Seventh enters

Seventh:

I heard, the aliens
Have claimed yet another soul tonight

Third:

Oh. god...

Seventh:

I always knew that it will happen
This place is riddled with the flying saucers
I saw one myself the other day
And hid myself beneath a rubber duck.

Third:

This one may be the killer too.
He's crazy; You can expect anything from him.

The Eighth

The Eighth enters

Eighth:

Now what's that noise; Can't a man
Just have a rest here; In his room
That he pays so much for
To this filthy settlement

Third:

This one is a tourist; He lives here for a season
He likes the local weather very much
He might have killed the poor fella accidentally
And never notice, for he's rich as fuck.

Second:

Excuse us, good sir; We are investigating;
A man went missing on this night
Have you heard anything, anything suspicious?
Please tell us all about it, thank you very much.

Eighth:

I did not hear anything; my room
Is highly soundproof and I have air conditioning
I slept very fine and had no dreams as well.
If only... I had very weird vision
When I woke up, and was in haze
I saw a man, falling down
And he was never going to hit the ground.

Second:

Thank you sir, you helped us a lot.
Are there any more potential witnesses?

The Ninth

The Ninth enters.

Ninth:

I slept on this bench, wrapped in newspapers.
I heard a rumble near the Pit.
I think a man was killed over there; a helpless victim;
(Points at the Third) This guy! He killed him!

Third gasps at Ninth and reaches for the pocket. The Second quickly pulls out the pistol and fires at Third. Third falls, blood is spilled all over the pit edge. Everyone freezes in shock.

Ninth:

There. Now can I have a drink?

Second:

I suspected him from the very beginning.
He was suspicious as hell
I suspected him so hard, that if I did suspect a little more...

Fifth:

The integer would overflow?

Second:

Yeah, something like that.

Suddenly, the First glows intensely for a moment. Everybody notices him. The First slowly rises on his feet

First:

Now I remember everything. I killed myself.
I tried to become a higher entity.
And so I fell, into the Pit
I fell so long, it was, like, never ending.
The airflow ripped the flesh from my bones
My blood was raining over the dark walls
There was no end to endless fall;
No white light in the far end of a tunnel.
I fell a lot; then I fell even more
I somehow lived; My body was no more though.
I was becoming something else; but then
A human sacrifice brought me back up here;
I'm back in flesh. For that I should thank you.
I'm sorry it turned out this way. I left a note; It did say not to blame nobody.

The First picks a scrap of paper from the Third's hand

First:

Well, that's the note; Now why did not this moron show it
That serves him right. Now leave me in peace.
Don't worry that I'll fall back in;
I may never find the strength, and anyway
You need something more than mortal life
To become something more than mortal.
This much I learned. Now I leave.
Don't follow me.

The First leaves

Second:

My work is done; The life is saved
I'll go write a report and eat a doughnut
Thanks to anyone who participated.
Don't fall in holes. I wish you luck

The end.
